Tea & Trends: 5 trends from June 2022

Date 27.06.2022

Kettle boiled? Check.
Ready to learn? Check.
Biscuits at the ready? Check.

That’s how you know you’re back for another Tea & Trends.

We’re bringing together some of the most impactful trends and updates in digital each month, so you don’t have to, putting a focus on one of our sector specialties: pubs and restaurants.

Of course, these trends and tips could apply to any brand, really, so stay open-minded and creative! Oh, and don’t miss out on last month’s Tea & Trends

Now let’s get into it before your brew goes cold – here’s everything you need to know from June 2022.

1. TikTok launches new Discovery Tool:

TikTok’s new Discover tool allows marketers within TikTok’s Creative Centre section to explore trending hashtags, sounds, and creators, as well as get an overview of topic interest over time, related interests, and the demographic data around trends, as shown in Matt Navarro’s tweets:

How to make these work for your pub or restaurant:

If you’re thinking about advertising on TikTok or asking an agency to look into it for you, this is where you’ll be able to find all the latest trending content to jump onto. Think about how you could make a song, dance, or topic relevant to what you do.

2. You can now pin three Reels to the top of your Instagram grid.

Simple, but impactful – Instagram now allows you to pin three posts or Reels to the top of your Instagram grid. This is no doubt an attempt to keep up with TikTok, which has a user’s three most popular videos at the top of their profile when you click to view them.

How to make it work for your pub or restaurant:

It’s as easy as choosing your three favourite posts or Reels and pinning them to the top of your Instagram. Think about what your audience would most want to see… For example, while we’re in the middle of summer, how about highlighting your spacious beer garden, chilled drinks range, and lighter dishes?

You know better than us what your biggest appeal as a pub or restaurant is. Focus on that.

3. You can now post to TikTok from 8 social media management platforms.

We’re back to TikTok… just to keep you on your toes. TikTok has added more social media management platforms to its Marketing Partners Program, allowing marketers and content creators to organise, schedule and publish TikTok content from a variety of the most-used platforms, highlighted in the quote below.

This is all in the name of making TikTok even bigger, both easier to share content on and from. TikTok announced this update, stating:

Today, we are excited to introduce the TikTok Marketing Partners Program’s inaugural group of badged partners in the Content Marketing specialty. These eight industry leaders – Brandwatch, Dash Hudson, Emplifi, Hootsuite, Khoros, Later, Sprinklr, and Sprout Social – have built innovative solutions that make it easier for brands to publish, manage, and track their content on TikTok, all within the content management tools that brands already use and love. We are excited to connect brands with these trusted partners who can help them lean into and level up their TikTok-first content strategies.

How to make it work for your pub or restaurant:

If you’ve been posting TikTok content natively and having to switch back over to your social media management platform of choice for every other social channel, that time is over!

Stick with Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or whichever platform you use for everything, saving you time when organising, scheduling, and posting your social content. More time for a pint in the sun, right?

4. Pinned replies may be coming to Twitter.

This means that users would be able to pin selected tweet replies to the top of their replies section under a tweet. Why is this useful? Well, if you’re getting a new FAQ based on a tweet and you reply to the first person who asked the question, you could then pin this reply and no-one else will be left wondering.

How to make it work for your pub or restaurant:

Other than the example mentioned above, you could also use pinned replies to announce the winner to a competitor or reply to an older tweet of your own teasing a new dish or drink and make the big reveal.

We’ll be keeping an eye on this one to see what creative ways brands and content creators find for this seemingly functional feature in the works.

5. Meta Avatar reaction options added to Instagram Stories.

First thing’s first… Remember that Facebook is now called Meta. Next, remember Meta Avatars? Well, they’re now becoming an option for reactions to Instagram Stories.

When reacting to Stories, some people have started seeing the option for either ‘Emoji’ or ‘Avatar’. If you choose ‘Avatar’, you’ll be sent to Avatar Creation (if you haven’t created your own Avatar beforehand) and have a selection of sticker responses featuring your Avatar.

New drinking game… How many times can we say Avatar in one paragraph?!

How to make it work for your pub or restaurant:

Nothing for you to do on this one! You may start seeing Avatar reactions to your Stories, or even want to create your own Avatars to catch the attention of other brands, pubs, or customers you happen to follow on Instagram.

Planning your July 2022 marketing: What should you focus on now?

Effective marketing is all about planning ahead, so where should your mind be as we head into July? Well, here’s what we’re starting to think about now:

  • Local summer events: It’s still the summer, so we’re going to keep banging on about local summer events. Find out what’s in your local area and make sure that people from far and wide know there’s a great pub or restaurant just around the corner…
  • Graduations: It’s a month of graduation celebrations, and you know students of all ages are going to want to celebrate at the pub with friends and family. Capture this crowd with your social content.
  • Summer of sports: As you saw from the calendar above, there are so many different sports fixtures and events to watch, and there’s nowhere better than at the pub. If you have TVs showing off all the action, shout about it from the rooftops. You could be packed like Wimbledon if you play your cards right.
  • Christmas 2022: We’re getting into Christmas planning for our UK pub and restaurant clients already, so you should be doing the same! Early bookers start looking around for places to have their seasonal celebrations any day now, so make sure you have something on your website (or even a physical flyer) in your pub.

Finish your brew…

That’s all for this month, but we’ll be back again at the end of July for another Tea & Trends, keeping you at the forefront of digital, from brand websites to social media innovation and everything in-between.
